O coaching é uma técnica que se dirige à área cognitiva da mente. Não tem nada de misterioso, muito menos de esotérico. O coach profissional ouve, observa e faz perguntas. O objectivo das sessões de coaching é negociado com o cliente, sendo estipulado um plano e um prazo para a obtenção de resultados. Resultados concretos, observáveis, a nível da atitude e do comportamento.O processo de aprendizagem compete ao próprio cliente, sendo o coach um parceiro neste caminho. Entre estes dois parceiros deve ser formulado um compromisso, em termos dos objectivos a alcançar e do tempo necessário para tal.
